After saving Gambia, African countries turn their backs on Nigeria
Shehu Sani

African countries are longer looking to Nigeria’s leadership role on the continent despite saving the likes of Gambia from political upheaval, so says Senator Shehu Sani.

The lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district made this assertion on Wednesday, February 1 in a short statement.

According to Sani, this disappointing development is evident in the way Nigeria lost in all its elections at the African Union meeting at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

Chad’s Moussa Mahamat became African Union’s new chairman defeating other candidate’s including Nigeria’s. Sani blamed Nigeria’s loss in the elections on poor organisation and the fact that African countries no longer have Nigeria’s back. “Nigeria's outing at the #AU Addis Ababa election was dismal and disappointing. We woefully failed in all the elections. We were unprepared and unorganized and clearly other African nations turned their back on us.

"This is a wakeup call. To maintain relevance and influence in the continent, our moral status must match our demographic size and contribution to the continent.” Meanwhile, African leaders have adopted a strategycalling for a collective withdrawal from the international criminal court. The non-binding decision came behind closed doors near the end of an African Union summit.
